What Are Modaks?

Modak is a traditional Indian sweet associated with Lord Ganesha and is especially popular during Ganesh Chaturthi.

Traditional modaks can be made with a rice flour covering and a filling of coconut and jaggery. There are also many modern versions, including chocolate modak, mawa modak, dry fruit modak and almond modak.

This recipe takes a simpler approach by using almond flour as the main ingredient. Instead of making a separate outer covering and filling, the mixture is cooked together and shaped into modaks using a mould.

Ingredients for making Modak with almond flour :

TIPS FOR MAKING PERFECT INSTANT BADAM MODAK :

Use Fresh Almond Flour: For the best taste, use fresh, high-quality almond flour. You can also roast the flour slightly for an enhanced flavor.

Adjust the Sweetness: The amount of sugar or jaggery can be cut to suit your taste.

Add Flavor Variations: A few drops of rose water will add a unique twist on the traditional flavor.

You can substitute almonds with any other nuts like cashews or walnuts for a variation.

Steps for making Almond flour modak :

Powdering the saffron strands with fingers first helps in giving intense color to the milk quickly.

Into the heated milk mixture add the almond flour and make and cook on low heat until mixed well

Switch off heat before adding powdered sugar else it will make the mixture soggy.

Quickly shape the modak by making a conical shape and make lines with a knife to look like traditional modak.

Stick small pieces of edible silver foil for the festive feel.

Serving and storage:

  • Modak is usually served as a prayer offering to God and the given as Prasad .You may eat it as a snack or sweet anytime.
  • Store in airtight in room temperature for unto two days.
  • Stays good if refrigerated in airtight container for upto a week.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Almond flour I have used store bought
  • 1/2 cup Powdered sugar reduce for a healthier version
  • 3 tbsp Ghee clarified butter
  • 1/3 cup Milk
  • 1/4 tsp Cardamom powder for a aroma and flavor
  • Few Saffron strands color and garnishing
  • Few Chopped nuts like cashews and pistachios for added crunch optional
  • Few Raisins

Instructions

  • Warm up 1/3 glass of milk in a microwave. Crush few saffron strands with your fingers and add to it . Stir well until combined cover and allow it to rest for 20 minutes.
  • Heat the ghee in a heavy bottom pan until fully melted. Reduce heat and pour the warm saffron milk mixture over the ghee . Allow the mix to gradually warm up well . Keep stirring continuously so it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan.
  • Now add the almond flour and stir well until it abosorbs the moisture and comes together. Do not make it too dry else it will break when laddu is made.
  • Switch off heat remove from stove. Add the powdered sugar and cardamom powder. Mix until combined then add the chopped dry fruit mix again until well distributed.
  • When the mixture is slightly cool start working quickly by shaping the laddu holding a a fist full of ball and shape them into conical shape. Once all the modaks are done cut the silver warqs into small piece on the wax paper it comes in and carefully place a small piece on each modak for decoration.
  • Store in air tight container. For transporting, serving to a crowd keep each modak in a cupcake liner so it doesn't break.

Notes

  • You can substitute almonds with any other nuts like cashews or walnuts for a variation.
  • If the mixture feels too dry and does not bind, add a little more warm ghee. The warmth of  ghee will help in binding the mixture into a dough-like consistency.
