Venad Paal Konju – A Taste of South Kerala
There are certain aromas that instantly transport you to the coastal feel. This is one such recipe that will take you to kitchens of Kerala. Where the aroma of freshly ground spices mingles with the sweetness of coconut milk wafts in the air. Venad Paal Konju is one such keeper recipe everyone needs to learn. This recipe is made popular by the son of this land - Chef Pillai.
"Konju" means prawns (or shrimp) in Malayalam, while "Paal" refers to coconut milk. The abundant availability of seafood and coconut with the heavy western influence on this area has resulted in some of the delicately mild dishes you see in Kerala cuisine.
The ancient technique of extracting coconut oil from cooking coconut milk on firewood stove for long hours is called Venda velichanna. Here the chef is trying to imitate the same flavor by mixing milk and oil cooking strategy.
Unlike the other fiery red prawn curries served for Kerala meals, this version is mellow, fragrant, and delicately spiced. Coconut milk forms the heart of the curry, allowing the natural sweetness of fresh prawns to shine.
Served alongside steaming hot white rice, appam, idiyappam, or soft neer dosa, this traditional curry is pure comfort food.
Whether you're looking for an authentic Kerala seafood recipe or a special weekend meal, this South Kerala prawn curry deserves a place in your kitchen.

To appreciate each dish better you should know the history of that land and how the flavors evolved.
History of Kollam and Fishing :
The historic Kingdom of Venad was very powerful during the 16th and 17th century. The capital was located in the port city of Kollam, Kerala, India.
Kollam, formerly known as Quilon, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited port cities on India's southwest coast. For over 2,000 years, it served as an important center for maritime trade, welcoming merchants from Arabia, China, Rome, and later Europe. Its strategic location along the Arabian Sea made Kollam a thriving hub for spices, cashew, coir, and seafood.
Fishing has always been at the heart of Kollam's coastal life. Long before modern harbors and mechanized boats, local fishing communities depended on traditional wooden canoes, catamarans, and handwoven nets to catch sardines, mackerel, anchovies, prawns, and other seasonal fish. The sea provided not only food but also a livelihood that shaped the culture, cuisine, and traditions of the region.
The calm waters of Ashtamudi Lake, one of Kerala's largest backwaters, further enriched the local fishing industry. Fishermen harvested freshwater and brackish-water species, including pearl spot (karimeen), prawns, crabs, and clams, creating a unique blend of inland and coastal fishing traditions.
Today, Kollam remains one of Kerala's major fishing centers. Its bustling fish landing harbors receive a wide variety of fresh seafood every day, and traditional recipes such as fish curry, prawn roast, and coconut milk-based seafood curries continue to preserve the authentic flavors passed down through generations. Fishing is more than an occupation in Kollam—it is a way of life that reflects the city's deep connection to the sea and its centuries-old maritime heritage.
